Itinerary

DAY 1: Setting out from Scenic Seattle

The adventure begins in the Emerald City of Seattle, on the Pacific coast of the United States. Arrive early and head to the Seattle Aquarium to see sea otters and a giant Pacific octopus. For incredible views of Puget Sound and the surrounding mountains, take a stroll through the nine-acre Olympic Sculpture Park, admiring the work of renowned artists. For a feast of the senses, visit the famous Pike Place Market, which has been operating for over a century. This lively farmer’s market boasts everything from buskers and bars to salmon-throwing fishmongers. You’ll spend the night here in Seattle before your connecting flight to Alaska tomorrow. If you have the time to go farther afield, we recommend booking a Pre-Programme with us and discovering some of the region’s natural highlights.

MEALS: Nil

OVERNIGHT: 4 Star Hotel, Seattle

DAY 2: There is No Place Like Nome

Today you’ll take an early flight from Seattle to Nome, Alaska, where your state-of-the-art expedition ship awaits to take you on a journey through the famed Northwest Passage and beyond. Prospectors first came to Nome in 1898, and people still hunt for gold here today. You’ll see evidence of the Gold Rush era all around, including abandoned dredges, turn-of-the-century steam engines, and old railroad tracks, lending the town a unique and intriguing atmosphere. You’ll be in good company as you explore the town, as Wyatt Earp, the famous sheriff, opened a saloon here. Nome was also the end point of three of Roald Amundsen’s great polar expeditions. Upon boarding the ship and collecting your complimentary expedition jacket, it’s time to check out your cabin, meet the Expedition Team, and explore your new home-from-home. Your adventure has truly begun.

MEALS: Breakfast, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Roald Amundsen

DAYS 3-6: Along the Alaskan Coast

Join your Expedition Team for insightful lectures as we journey through the Beaufort Sea towards Amundsen Gulf, the gates to the Northwest Passage on this eastbound transit. Topics might include wildlife, tectonic activity, glaciology, and local history, which will prepare you for the adventures ahead. The highlights of this transit include the Bering Strait, crossing the International Date Line, sailing across the Beaufort Sea, and wildlife watching.

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Roald Amundsen

DAYS 7-14: Exploration and Adventure

Our excursions begin on day seven as we enter the Western Canadian Arctic. Over the next eight days, we’ll transit through three distinct regions – Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and Yukon – and two traditional Inuit Territories – Inuvialuit and Nunavut. During our time here, we anticipate up to five days of shore excursions and four transit days. Excursion stops and local highlights we hope to visit include Herschel Island, Smoking Hills, Ulukhaktok, Coronation Gulf, Cambridge Bay (Iqaluktuuttiaq), and Gjoa Haven (Uqsuqtuuk).

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Roald Amundsen

DAY 15: Into Bellot Strait

The ‘Rubicon’ of the Canadian Arctic that divides West from East is the infamous Bellot Strait. This narrow body of water separates the northernmost part of mainland North America from Somerset Island, one of the largest islands in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Bellot Strait is approximately 15 nautical miles long and just over half a mile wide at its narrowest point. Our ability to navigate this passage will be determined by ice and weather conditions.

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Roald Amundsen

DAYS 16-20: The Eastern Canadian Arctic

On the eastern shores of Somerset Island, we find ourselves in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. The main waterway of this area is Lancaster Sound (Tallurutiup Imanga), the eastern gates to the Northwest Passage. This chapter of our exploration is likely to be action-packed, with excursions planned on each of the five days we hope to spend in and around this area. Excursion stops and local highlights we hope to share with you include Fort Ross, Prince Leopold Island (Appait), Beechey Island (Iluvilik), Croker Bay, Dundas Harbour, and Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik).

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Roald Amundsen

DAY 21: Crossing Baffin Bay

Leaving Nunavut behind, our expedition cruise continues to Greenland across Baffin Bay. The Expedition Team will continue their onboard lectures on topics such as the wildlife of the Arctic, Inuit culture, and the history of exploration in this region. Why not take part in one of our Citizen Science projects, helping photograph and track whales, or observing the clouds to help scientists study our climate by contributing to the GLOBE Program.

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Roald Amundsen

DAYS 22-24: The Wonders of West Greenland

The final chapter of our journey encompasses the majestic coast of West Greenland. We will begin by sailing into Disko Bay, a haven for whales and seals. Over the next three days, you’ll experience some of the most iconic sites in all of Greenland. Our objectives include Ilulissat, which is nestled at the edge of the magnificent Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you’ll find an ever-changing gallery of passing icebergs set against a backdrop of colourful houses. In town, you can visit a multitude of shops selling local crafts, and on the outskirts, walking trails take you along the epic icefjord. Sisimiut is Greenland’s second city, situated in a spectacular location just above the Arctic Circle. This area has a history spanning more than 4,500 years, and old traditions are alive and well. Learn more about ancient Saqqaq artifacts in the local museum or stretch your legs on a hike. If you’re looking for a special souvenir, pick up a scarf, hat, or mittens made of qiviut, the inner wool of the musk ox that’s said to be 10 times warmer than sheep’s wool. As we head north, we plan to offer an exploration day in the magical and pristine Evighedsfjord near Maniitsoq. The ‘Fjord of Eternity’ is fed by an ice cap that carves huge icebergs into its 2,300 ft deep waters. It’s surrounded by mist-cloaked mountains with beautiful white ridges, punctuated by crystal blue ice caves. We’ll determine on the day what adventures we can take part in.

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Roald Amundsen

DAY 25: Old and New in Nuuk

Today we arrive in Nuuk, Greenland’s colourful capital. It has a population of 18,000 and boasts a striking mix of old and new buildings. We’ll explore this fascinating city, comparing the old buildings such as Hans Egede House and Nuuk Cathedral with the ultra-modern architecture of the Parliament of Greenland. Your voyage ends with a flight from Nuuk to Reykjavík, and an overnight stay.

MEALS: Breakfast

OVERNIGHT: 4 Star Hotel, Reykjavík

DAY 26: Cosmopolitan Reykjavík

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and discover the city before connecting to your onward flight home. Packed full of art, culture, and history, Iceland’s capital is a delight to explore. Visit Laugavegur, the main shopping street, and head towards the striking Hallgrímskirkja church. Or explore the many galleries and museums dotted around the city. If you have the time, we recommend booking a post-programme with us and discovering some of Iceland’s natural highlights.

THE SHIP & CABINS

MS ROALD AMUNDSEN

In 2019, Hurtigruten Expeditions welcomed the MS Roald Amundsen, a state-of-the-art vessel featuring environmentally sustainable hybrid technology designed to reduce fuel consumption and demonstrate the viability of hybrid propulsion on large ships. Named after the first man to cross Antarctica and reach the South Pole, this ship sets a new standard for sustainable travel. Constructed for voyages in polar waters, it serves as a comfortable base camp at sea, bringing adventurers to some of the world’s most spectacular destinations. The MS Roald Amundsen’s innovative design cuts emissions by using electrical propulsion, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20%. The interior design features Scandinavian materials like granite, oak, birch, and wool, creating relaxed and stylish cabins, all of which are outside, with 50% featuring private balconies and aft suites offering private outdoor hot tubs. The two-level indoor/outdoor Observation Deck is perfect for scanning the scenery and wildlife watching.

The MS Roald Amundsen ensures a luxurious and comfortable journey with a full suite of facilities designed for relaxation and activity. The Explorer Lounge & Bar offers stunning views through floor-to-ceiling windows, and the onboard Science Centre is equipped with high-tech gadgets for an educational and interactive experience. Guests can enjoy mouthwatering meals inspired by regional flavours at three different restaurants: Aune, Fredheim, and Lindstrøm, the latter named after the favourite chef of Norwegian polar heroes. The ship also features a Pool Bar for a refreshing dip and cocktail. After a day of exploration, guests can relax in the wellness centre, which offers treatments such as massages, or work out in the fitness room. The aft infinity pool and hot tubs provide a perfect way to unwind while enjoying breathtaking views. DESTINATION & PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS:

Exploring the world shouldn’t be stressful, and with each of our unique destinations having different entry requirements (Identification, Visa, Vaccination Status, etc.) it can be confusing to get the right information for your passport. This is why we have pulled together all the information with the help of our partners at Smartvel to ensure you have everything you need to plan your next adventure with us.

Like with any international travel, A valid passport is essential, as it’s the only accepted identification document. The passport validity must be in accordance with national requirements in the country/countries you will visit AND have a minimum of 6 months remaining validity at the end of your cruise.

To comply with clearance requirements in some destinations, we collect guests’ passports during check-in. Please be assured that your passport is kept in a secure location throughout the expedition cruise and will be returned to you at the end of your stay with us.

SMARTVEL TRAVEL TOOL:
To ensure you are ready for your upcoming expedition cruise, our partnership with Smartvel means you can find out the specific destination requirements for you.

Enter your information and details about your upcoming trip into the portal.

The portal will confirm the specific destination requirements for your trip (Inc. Passport, Visa, Vaccination Requirements, Covid-19 Requirements)

Carefully read the requirements and select the ‘+’ next to ‘travel documents’ to find specific destination requirements (Inc. Passport, Visa, Vaccination Requirements, and COVID-19 requirements.

If you are transiting through another country, fill out the ‘transit’ section to find out the required documents.

Should you have any issues finding your requirements, please see the additional destination requirement information below.

Click on the link below to find out what you need to do to enter the country you are sailing from.

Please Note: We are unable to accept any liability if you are denied access to a flight or entry into a country or are otherwise affected by difficulties or costs resulting from your passport not being approved or if you have not obtained the required documentation. It is your responsibility to ensure that you comply with any mandatory visa or travel documentation that is required at the time of travel.

MEDICAL SCREENING FORM:

At HX Hurtigruten Expeditions – we explore some of the world’s most remote locations and as such,in many of these locations, sophisticated medical services are few and far between. Medical care at sea is limited, and often emergency sea and air services may also be inaccessible, particularly in the polar regions. It is therefore vital that you make us aware of any current or past health issues.
The Health, Safety and well-being of you our guests and on-board crew are our top priority, and we want to ensure that all our guests are fit for travel. On board all our ships, we will have a qualified physician, which have a small, limited medical facility with basic medical supplies and equipment. Still, that makes it more difficult to diagnose and treat even the simplest conditions. This often leads to missed diagnosis, worsening conditions, a greater burden of chronic disease, and in some cases, unnecessary costly medical disembarkations.

Our expeditions often explore remote regions, where sophisticated medical services are not readily available. To minimize the risks to your health, it’s vital that guests on Antarctic sailings make our medical partner, Vikand, aware of any current or past health issues via a Medical Screening Form.

The form is assessed by Vikand, a maritime medical specialist.

As such we require all guests (including children) to submit and complete the Medical Screening Form before departure to Antarctica.

How to complete the Medical Screening Form?

All forms consist of two sections – The guest section and the Doctor’s section. Both sections need to be filled in and signed. If your own doctor refuses to sign the form, please contact an alternative doctor, or use online doctor services to fill in the form. Vikand Medicals is also offering a digital appointment service to support the Medical Screening Form process. This appointment can be booked through the Vikand portal.

The Medical Screening Form can be filled out by a doctor and by a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) or Physician’s Assistant (PA).

People who can NOT fill out a Medical Screening Form:

Nurse Practitioner

Advance Nurse Practitioner/ Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

Pharmacist

Nurse (RN or RNA)

EMTs

Or any other medical-related professional who does not have a doctor’s certificate/ licence.

Upon submitting your Medical Screening Form, you will receive an e-mail confirmation to the e-mail included within your submission form – please also check Spam / Junk Folders as they could appear here. If you still haven’t received any confirmation within an hour of submitting your form, please contact Hurtigruten Customer Service, and we can get a confirmation e-mail sent to you.
If you have submitted your Medical Screening Form within 4-8 weeks from departure, you should expect to receive the results within 3 working days (if submitted more than 8 weeks out, it might take longer for results to come through). If the screening team has a doubt about the passenger’s safety to join the Expedition sailing to a remote destination, an additional week might be needed to get a second opinion.

Please note: We are only accepting the Medical Screening Form available through the Vikand portal which has been specially designed for HX Hurtigruten Expedition sailings to remote destinations.
Appointments with Vikand

Vikand Medicals is also offering a digital appointment service to support the Medical Screening Form process.

This appointment can be booked through the Vikand portal

The cost for an appointment with Vikand’s online doctor is 165 EUR, which is to be made payable at the time of booking – Vikand accepts both Visa and Mastercard. (In case of cancellation within 24 hours from the booked time or missed appointment, there is a service fee of 50 EUR which is non-refundable.)

Once you have made your appointment booking, you will receive a confirmation e-mail, that will include all the details of the online meeting room. Here, you will meet with one of Vikand’s doctors for your digital appointment.

Please Note: When you submit the Medical Screening Form, you will receive a Submission ID – which is your form’s tracking ID. When uploading the Doctor’s section of your medical form, or when using Vikand’s digital appointment service, it is important that you use this ID to ensure both sections of the Medical Screening Form are linked together. If you don’t use the Submission ID, this can delay the process and approval of your medical screening.

SHIP MANIFEST INFORMATION FORM:

All guests joining an expedition cruise must submit the Ship Manifest Information Form no later than eight weeks before embarkation.

GDPR & Data Protection

In completing this form, you are providing us with personal information which we process in accordance with the GDPR and our Privacy Policy. The information contained in sections 1-5 is essential information that is processed either on the basis of contractual necessity or in order to comply with legal obligations placed on us. VACCINATIONS AND VIRUSES:

The safety of our guests, our employees, and the communities we visit is our priority. We’ve partnered with experts in health and safety to design and implement protocols and procedures across our expedition fleet. You may require vaccinations for your expedition. Please consult your doctor for information on the vaccines you need for your expedition.

Yellow fever

Certain parts of South and Central America, along with our West African destinations, are located in what is classified as the “Yellow Fever endemic zones”. This means all travellers above the age of 9 months must receive the yellow fever vaccination before travelling to these regions. Please note this does not include travellers only visiting Antarctica.

The certificate for the yellow fever vaccination is only valid from 10 days after you receive the vaccination. If you have not had the vaccine in time, you may be denied entry to these areas or instructed to quarantine for up to 6 days. If such a situation occurs, Hurtigruten Expeditions cannot accept any liability.

If you need a vaccination certificate for the country you are visiting, but you are not able to have the vaccine due to medical reasons, contact a yellow fever vaccination centre or your doctor. They may provide you with an exemption certificate, which may be accepted by officials in countries that usually require a vaccination certificate.

Zika virus

Zika virus is also detected in Central and South America and Africa so we advise you to talk to your doctor to understand the risks, especially if you are trying to get or are pregnant.

Additional Information

When travelling to countries known to have a risk of yellow fever or Zika virus transmission, we also advise guests to ensure they bring suitable long-sleeved shirts and pants to wear when out on an expedition along with their own supply of insect repellent.

We also recommend seeking medical advice about yellow fever and Zika virus as it is a mandatory requirement for some areas in South and Central America as well as West Africa. You can find out more information about your destination via these links here:
