CULTURE

Explore some of Japan’s largest cities while also getting a taste for the more traditional side of the country. Bustling Osaka with its brightly lit streets and fantastic food culture. Take a trip to ancient Nara, famous for its many temples and hundreds of free-roaming deer. Visit Takayama, a wonderfully preserved old merchant town of the Edo period and see the famous 200-year-old farmhouses of Shirakawago.

Step inside one of Japan’s last remaining original castles in Matsumoto. Head to the dizzying heights of Mount Fuji’s  5th station, 2300m above sea level.  Here you will be treated to breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape.

Walk the streets of Kyoto and take a step back in time as you explore the old temples and shrines.  A must see is a visit to the iconic Bamboo Grove and Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama, a district on the outskirts of Kyoto. Visit the Golden Pavillion, a beautiful Zen temple completely covered in gold leaf. 

Visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome. Take a cruise to the famous Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island, best known for its floating torii gate. And see Himeji Castle, one of Japan’s last surviving feudal age castles.

Hakuba is a village in the Japanese Alps, just outside the city of Nagano, which was host of the 1998 Winter Olympics. It encompasses stunning mountain resorts with terrain for snowboarding, skiing and hiking. There are 10 mountains and numerous runs of all levels in the Hakuba range, all within close distance and reached by the local shuttle bus.  There’s fresh powder to carve up for yourself every day, as well as a lively après-ski scene and hot springs. The different mountains offer a variety of runs, as well as off-piste back country and challenging tree runs!

Pension Folktale is a family run bed and breakfast with ski-in ski-out access. Mr and Mrs Suzuki run the pension and they are the most incredible hosts.  Mr Suzuki is an ex-professional ski jumper with countless trophies on display around the pension.  He can organise back-country hiking tours for something different. Mrs Suzuki prepares the most incredible meals during your stay. Breakfast and dinner are like gourmet feasts and will give you the energy you need for a day on the slopes. As an ex-chef in a French Michelin Star kitchen, Mrs Suzuki’s cooking is a mix of French and Japanese and is to die for!
