Best Time To Travel – It may sound cliched but Sri Lanka is genuinely a year-round holiday destination, although the best time to visit Sri Lanka is between November and April, which is considered to be the peak season. If you are looking for a beach getaway then take note of the different monsoon seasons as this can make sunbaking a bit difficult in the rain! However, as our tours cover a wide area of the country, travel in monsoon seasons does not affect our itineraries.
Capital City – Cosmopolitan Colombo, gateway to the wonder of Sri Lanka and the starting point for all our tours boasts a rich colonial heritage, featuring a melting pot of races, religions and cultures.
Currency – The national currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee. The approximate exchange is $1 = 132 Rupee. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Sri Lanka, even in smaller towns. Visa and MasterCard are the most commonly accepted cards. Some items are advertised in USD so it is always handy to carry USD in cash. Our guides can assist you with money exchange while on tour in Sri Lanka.
Approximate Travel Time – 14 hours. Flights are available from most capital cities in Australia to Colombo with a number of the major airlines. The only direct flights are with Sri Lanka Airlines out of Melbourne. All other cities and airlines will incur a stopover somewhere in Asia.
Religion – 70% of people living in Sri Lanka practice Buddhism. The freedom to choose and express religious affiliation is guaranteed under the Sri Lankan constitution.
Famous Dish – The central feature of Sri Lankan cuisine is boiled or steamed rice, served with a curry of fish or chicken , along with other curries made with vegetables, lentils, or fruits. Dishes are accompanied by pickled fruits or vegetables, chutneys, and sambols.
Visa Required – Yes. Australian citizens are required to obtain an evisa for entry. A 30 day tourist visa can be purchased for USD $35.
Fitness Level – We rate our Sri Lanka tours as requiring a moderate level of fitness. There is quite a bit of walking around sites and monuments which require full mobility. If you are game enough to climb to the top of Sigiriya, then a high level of fitness is required. These steps are not for the faint hearted!
