Travel overland through the stunning Borneo hinterland, stopping for a night at Mt Kinabalu National Park, enjoying breathtaking views. Delve into WWII history with an included visit to Kundasang War Memorial; dedicated to the Australian soldiers who died in the Sandakan POW camp during their death marches to Ranau.
Continue on to Sepilok to visit the Orangutan and Sunbear sanctuaries. Then, experience the real Borneo with two nights in a jungle lodge set on the banks of the Kinabatangan River. Here you will enjoy relaxing river cruises in search of Pygmy Elephants, wild orangutans, Macaques and more exotic wildlife. Head back to Sandakan and enjoy a visit to a local Fisherman village including a sunset cruise to see thousands of fireflies and dinner on your final night. 3 DAY / 2 NIGHT TURTLE ISLAND EXTENSION:
Selingan Island or also fondly known as Turtle Island, is a safe haven for the green and hawksbill turtles. Both turtle species are currently endangered but the island serves as place for them to safely lay their eggs.
Just 40 kilometres north of Sandakan’s coasts in the Sulu Sea, the island is a designated National Park and turtle conservation area, which you can visit and stay at to witness the amazing scene of turtle landings themselves!
Turtle landings happen throughout the year and the turtles normally go to shore after dusk to lay their eggs.
Besides witnessing the turtles laying eggs, you will also be able to see how the collection of eggs and tagging of the mother turtles is done. Another highlight of your visit would be witnessing the release of cute baby turtles back to the sea! Other activities that you can enjoy during your time at the island is swimming and snorkelling.
